Trudeau Says Liberal Government Open to International Travel Ban

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today said he’s consider an international travel ban.

Speaking to reporters outside his home in Ottawa, Trudeau said that “strong measures” have been adopted by his Liberal government in the fight against the coronavirus.

As the subject turned to the latest variants on the virus, the PM was asked if he’d consider a ban on international travel.

“Our measures have been very strong, but we’re always open to strengthening them as necessary,” Trudeau said.

The Prime Minister said Ottawa’s 14-day quarantine for arriving Canadians and visitors has been extremely effective. But he also said Cabinet is “always looking at various measures as they are effective elsewhere in the world.”

Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc earlier this month sparked headlines when he said that “any measure that tells Canadians that nonessential travel internationally should not be undertaken is something that we’re prepared to look at.”

Trudeau today said Ottawa could ban certain flights that might increase the risk of the new variant of COVID-19 making its way to Canada. Canada last month temporarily banned flights from the UK due to a new variant of the virus, a ban that was later lifted.

“We’re doing whatever it takes to protect Canadians, including looking at banning certain flights if necessary,” Trudeau told the media today.
“Decisions must be made based on public health guidance.”
