Air Canada Suspending Rouge Flights; Laying Off 80 Workers

News reports say Air Canada Rouge flights will be temporarily suspended starting Monday, February 8.

A report on Global News says the move is a “result of new travel restrictions put in place by the federal government” as it tries to deal with new variants of COVID-19.

“As a result of our suspension of all flights to the Caribbean and Mexico at the request of the Canadian government, we are again pausing our Rouge operations effective Feb. 8 as these flights are primarily operated by Rouge,” the Canadian airliner said in an emailed statement to Global News.

Both City News Toronto and Global say that roughly 80 Rouge workers have been handed temporary layoffs.

Air Canada suspended Rouge operations for most of 2020, but restarted flights in November ahead of what it hoped would be a busier winter season.

Air Canada says Rouge remains a part of its long-term business plan.

Meanwhile, a CBC report yesterday said WestJet will be permanently laying off 130 workers in Manitoba as part of a contracting out program.
