Intense Severe Storms in Southern Ontario Threaten Widespread Tornadoes and Damage

Southern Ontario is all set for what meteorologists and Environment Canada warn could be one of the most volatile outbreaks of weather in this year. A potent cold front sweeping in Michigan straight into a moisture-laden and warm airmass, unleashing a multi-day surge of violent thunderstorms in Ontario.

• Risk of Tornado – The explosive atmospheric shear of wind has put the forecasters in high alert, with conditions that are ripe for isolated supercells that are capable of creating destructive and sudden tornadoes.

The forecasters emphasize that while the prefrontal showers in the morning have already shaken some parts of the region, the most dangerous leg of the storm may take as a sharp and cold front pushes from the cottage country through Barrie, sweeping Niagara and GTA.

As atmospheric instability rises, the local emergency management officials are requesting residents remain vigilant.

Any sudden tornado warning in neighboring municipalities or Toronto will demand quick action, like moving to low-lying rooms or interior basements, away from glass. Given intense environmental setup driving such severe storms in Southern Ontario, the region faces a quick-impact 24-hour window before a more stable, cooler airmass, finally stabilizing the province on Thursday.
