The Canada-Tunisia Air Transport Agreement has officially been expanded, focusing on cargo access, flight frequencies, and market opportunities between the nations.
Announced on 14th September 2026 by the Honorable Steve MacKinnon, Minister of Transport and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, the bilateral upgrade deepens the economic connection with North Africa and improves international mobility.
Upgrades under the expanded Canada-Tunisia air transport agreement
This upgraded framework significantly amplifies the operational capacity for air carriers operating between Tunisia and Canada.
- Dedicated all-cargo rights – Carriers have been granted unlimited weekly all-cargo flights, establishing a dedicated air freight right.
- Complete geographic market access – Airlines from both Canada and Tunisia can now access all points in each of these countries, removing the previous restriction of one designated destination in every nation.
- Increased passenger flight frequencies – Permitted passenger-combination flights have increased by 75%, enabling up to seven weekly flights for Canada and Tunisia, which is up from four.

Strengthening the economic and diaspora connections
Demand for direct connectivity between Canada and Tunisia has risen in recent years. Since the air transport agreement was last updated in 2019, bilateral passenger traffic has increased by more than 55%.

Commercial relations between Tunisia and Canada have reached $439 million in bilateral merchandise trade in 2025, accompanied by $183 million in Canadian direct investment in Tunisia. In addition to trade, this agreement supports a growing Canadian-Tunisian community of more than 30,000 people and nearly 3,000 Tunisian students studying in Canada.
