What’s New at Lake Louise Ski Resort This Winter? An Early Opening Is Just the Beginning

Winter has arrived ahead of schedule in the Canadian Rockies.
Lake Louise Ski Resort officially opened for the 2026/27 season on Nov. 1, five days earlier than planned and marking its second-earliest opening on record. After a cold October and weeks of snowmaking, skiers and snowboarders were back on snow while many resorts across North America were still counting down to opening day.
For travellers eager to dust off their gear, the early opening offers a chance to kick off the season before the usual November rush. But visitors at Lake Louise Ski Resorts should expect a gradual start rather than the resort’s full winter footprint, with additional terrain scheduled to open in the coming weeks.
The early start of Banff ski resorts may not come as a complete surprise. In late August, several western Canadian mountains received an unusual dusting of snow, offering an early preview of winter at Canadian ski resorts and fueling anticipation for the season ahead.
What’s open for early-season Lake Louise skiing
The resort credits favourable weather and around-the-clock work by mountain crews for bringing opening day forward.
“It’s time to warm up those ski legs,” the resort said in its announcement, noting that this is the earliest opening in five years.
At launch, skiing and riding were limited to the Juniper Express Chair and Easy Street, giving early visitors a chance to make their first runs of the season. Two small terrain parks, rental services, lessons and several food and beverage outlets also opened alongside the slopes.
More terrain set to open in the weeks ahead
According to the resort’s latest updates, the Glacier Chair was scheduled to open Nov. 7, unlocking access to the Bald Eagle and Juniper runs. Additional lifts and terrain will follow as snowfall and mountain conditions allow.
This detail is important for anyone hoping to make the most of an early-season visit. While Lake Louise Ski Resort is open, it is not yet operating at full capacity. The resort encourages guests to monitor snow reports and lift-status updates before travelling.
What’s changing on the mountain this season
When more terrain opens, returning guests will notice several changes across the Lake Louise ski resort.
Summer projects included expanded snowmaking and new ski runs at Richardson’s Ridge, along with additional glading designed to increase terrain options. The resort also created new connector trails, including Prunepickers and Pikaboo, aimed at improving movement across different areas of the mountain.
Meanwhile, upgrades to the Top of the World Chair included increased loading capacity, updated control systems and a more energy-efficient drive.
Guests will also notice new operating hours this winter, with lifts running daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The start of another busy winter in Banff
The early opening comes as the extensive Banff ski season gets underway. Nearby resorts including Sunshine Village and Mount Norquay are also preparing to welcome skiers, creating fresh opportunities for multi-resort Rockies holidays.
Skiers who are ready to make the most of winter escapes can get in touch with local travel advisors for foolproof assistance. It may also be the first sign that visitors can plan early-season adventures in one of Canada’s best-known ski destinations.
