Best Hotels in Canada: U.S. News Rates The Top 20 From Coast to Coast

February 3, 2021 Jim Byers

U.S. News has come out with its annual list of the top hotels in Canada, and there’s a nice geographic and style mix.

Luxury brands like Ritz-Carlton (first and fourth), Fairmont (four placements in the top 20) and Four Seasons (three in the top 20) did well, as did Shangri-La (two top 20 spots). Independent brands also soared to the top of the charts, including the remarkable Fogo Island Inn in Newfoundland, the Loden in Vancouver, Manoir Hovey in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, the Hazelton Hotel in Toronto and the amazing Wickaninnish Inn in Tofino, B.C.

Here’s the full list of their top 20 choices

  1. Ritz-Carlton, Montreal
  2. Rosewood Hotel Georgia, Vancouver (killer design and huge rooms)
  3. Fogo Island Inn, Newfoundland (perhaps the most astonishing hotel in Canada)
  4. Ritz-Carlton, Toronto (lovely rooms, a stylish lobby and a great spa)
  5. Fairmont Pacific Rim, Vancouver (modern luxury and sensational food)
  6. Four Seasons Resort and Residences, Whistler
  7. Wedgewood Hotel and Spa, Vancouver
  8. Four Seasons, Toronto (love their Boulud Cafe)
  9. Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac, Quebec City (a Canadian marvel)
  10. The Loden, Vancouver (sleek and sexy, with a youthful feel)
  11. Auberge Saint-Antoine, Quebec City (historic and beautiful)
  12. Shangri-La, Vancouver (luxury with an Asian touch + great cocktails)
  13. Manoir Hovey, Quebec (a favourite of Hillary Clinton)
  14. Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, Alberta (another Canadian classic)
  15. Wickaninnish Inn, Tofino B.C. (lovingly crafted and perfect for Tofino)
  16. Shangri-La, Toronto (gorgeous rooms and one of best lobbies in Canada)
  17. Fairmont Chateau, Whistler
  18. Hotel Nelligan, Montreal (a personal fave, with tons of style)
  19. The Hazelton Hotel, Toronto (a fabulous recent facelift, and superb food)
  20. Four Seasons, Montreal

For those of you keeping score at home, that’s six for Quebec, four for Ontario, one for Newfoundland, one for Alberta (seems low to me) and a whopping eight for British Columbia. If you’re looking at single cities or destinations, Montreal has three, Quebec City two, Whistler two, Toronto four and Vancouver five.
