A great Southern Ontario getaway: Muskoka and Algonquin Park

TORONTOSUN – As I look out on Lake Opeongo there’s no one in sight other than my guide, steering the canoe. I’m surrounded by lily pads and the only sounds are birdsongs, our paddles hitting the water and our friendly banter.
Randy Mitson, marketing director of Algonquin Outfitters, tells me people need at least 72-hours to really unwind and reap all the benefits that come from taking a trip in nature.
And there’s no shortage of places to do just that in Muskoka – a 6,475 square-kilometre recreational paradise, about 200 kilometres north of Toronto.
The area is known as cottage and camping country and is home to Algonquin Park, Ontario’s oldest and largest provincial park. To put that in perspective, you could fit Greater Toronto into the park, which is bigger than Prince Edward Island and just a bit smaller than Jamaica.
Algonquin has a vast number of hiking trails and more than 2,000 km of canoe routes. There’s only one road through the park though – Highway 60, which runs for about 55 km from the west to the east gate.
