Air Canada’s New Baggage Rules Could Cost Flyers More

May 28, 2026 Team Contributor

Air Canada travellers heading into the busy summer season are being advised to double-check baggage rules before flying. The airline has introduced updated checked baggage fees for several fare categories in 2026, while carry-on restrictions on lower fares continue to catch many passengers off guard.

Here’s everything Canadians need to know before heading to the airport.

What Changed in Air Canada’s Baggage Policy in 2026?

Air Canada updated its baggage pricing structure twice this year, with the latest international baggage fee changes taking effect for tickets purchased on or after May 14, 2026.

The revised fees now apply differently depending on destination and fare type.

Latest checked baggage fees for North America routes

These charges apply to flights within Canada, the US, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America.

Fare type First checked bag Second checked bag
Economy Basic CA$45 CA$60
Economy Standard CA$45 CA$60
Economy Flex Free CA$60

Passengers paying for luggage at the airport may also face higher check-in charges compared to prepaid online baggage purchases.

New international baggage fees introduced after May 14, 2026

Air Canada also increased baggage fees on several long-haul international routes, including flights between Canada or the U.S. and Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, South America, and the South Pacific.

Fare type First checked bag Second checked bag
Economy Basic CA/US$90 CA/US$120
Economy Standard Free CA/US$120
Economy Flex Free CA/US$120

The airline says the updated pricing applies to tickets purchased on or after May 14, 2026.

Carry-on Baggage Rules Canadians Should Remember

Air Canada still allows one personal item for all passengers. However, Economy Basic travellers on many North American and sun destination routes are no longer guaranteed a free standard carry-on bag.

Passengers travelling on these lower-cost fares may need to pay extra to bring larger cabin luggage onboard. Those who arrive at the gate with oversized bags could also face additional fees.

Standard carry-on size limits

Item Maximum dimensions
Carry-on bag 55 x 23 x 40 cm
Personal item 33 x 16 x 43 cm

Checked bags must generally remain under 23 kg unless travellers purchase premium fares or qualify for elite status benefits.

Aeroplan Elite Members Are Also Seeing Baggage Fee Changes

Some elite flyers have recently noticed that their complimentary baggage allowances aren’t as generous as they used to be, especially at the lower loyalty tiers. Because of this, travellers are advised to double-check their baggage allowance on their booking before heading to the airport.

Why Air Canada fees are rising

Airlines across North America have started raising extra fees in 2026 as global fuel prices continue to rise. Recent industry reports show that many carriers are increasing baggage charges while also cutting back on routes that aren’t as profitable.

Tips to Avoid Surprise Baggage Charges

  • Prepay checked bags online whenever possible
  • Review fare rules before booking Economy Basic tickets
  • Measure carry-on bags before arriving at the airport
  • Use Air Canada’s baggage calculator before travel
  • Verify Aeroplan baggage benefits in advance

With summer travel demand remaining strong, understanding the latest baggage rules could help Canadians avoid unexpected airport costs and last-minute travel stress.

As travellers adjust to Air Canada’s higher baggage fees and stricter rules, Canada’s aviation sector is preparing for a record summer rush. Here’s how NAV CANADA is expanding staffing and upgrading operations to handle rising passenger traffic and reduce delay concerns nationwide.
