Hantavirus Alert: 4 Passengers from MV Hondius Currently Under Isolation

The passengers who were successfully evacuated from MV Hondius, the hantavirus-hit cruise ship, are now in isolation in Victoria after returning to Canada. The update comes from top health officials in British Columbia.
The 4-person group includes a couple in their 70s, a passenger from Vancouver Island and a B.C.-connected traveller, who is currently living abroad.
All four of them are symptom-free but are closely monitored during the virus’s ‘critical incubation period’.
The passengers were among those from the MV Hondius, where the outbreak of the Andes-strain hantavirus has been linked to several confirmed infections and three deaths.
Health authorities worldwide are now tracing affected individuals and isolating passengers from numerous countries as concerns continue about a possible human-to-human spread.
Dr. Bonnie Henry emphasized that none of the Canadians had any confirmed direct contact with the infected individuals onboard.
But she also noted that “it was impossible to be completely sure”, especially given the nature of the outbreak.
Dr. Henry also reassured the public that the four travellers are isolating under controlled conditions and are being closely monitored by Island Health teams.
Canada’s Public Health Agency described the outbreak as the first documented Andes-strain hantavirus incident on a cruise ship.
A federal rapid risk assessment released earlier this week stated that health monitoring, border measures, and contact tracing are currently underway for Canadians who may have been exposed to the virus.
There have been mixed public reactions online to the hantavirus isolation measures, with some Canadians expressing concerns about the monitoring protocols and fearing further transmission.
Health officials continue to assure that hantavirus is completely different from COVID-19 and does not currently pose the same level of pandemic threat.
Nonetheless, with the ongoing global monitoring of the situation, the MV Hondius outbreak has become one of the most closely watched public health incidents of 2026.
