Travelling between Europe and Canada is set to become easier as the WestJet Icelandair codeshare agreement opens new routes and seamless connections for passengers on both sides of the Atlantic.
The codeshare agreement was announced at the IATA Annual General Meeting.
As per the agreement, Icelandair and WestJet will allow passengers to book flights across both airlines on a single ticket, with carefully checked baggage and more seamless journeys via Reykjavik’s Keflavík International Airport.
What the new deal means for travellers
This codeshare partnership is designed to simplify international travel while expanding destination choices, especially for Canadian passengers heading to Europe.
The agreement will come with benefits like:
- Single booking across both airlines
- Broadened travel options from multiple Canadian sites
- Through-checked baggage for quick and seamless connections
- Access to 10+ European destinations via Reykjavik
Once the pending regulatory approval is obtained, the agreement will build on both the airlines’ existing networks to create a more connected travel experience.
The deal is a strategic expansion for both airlines
WestJet is making its transatlantic presence stronger with returning and new routes to Iceland.
Later this summer, the airline is all set to launch non-stop flights from Winnipeg and Edmonton to Keflavík, while also resuming seasonal service from Calgary.
The routes will serve as crucial gateways for onward travel to Europe via Icelandair’s network.
“By leveraging Icelandair’s extensive network through Reykjavik, we are opening more seamless access to Europe while delivering greater value and convenience for travellers.” – John Weatherill, WestJet Executive Vice-President and Chief Commercial Officer
The first Canadian codeshare move by Icelandair
“This collaboration simplifies travel between Canada, Iceland and mainland Europe, enabling more seamless journeys across our combined networks.” – President and CEO Bogi Nils Bogason
For Icelandair, this is a significant milestone as its first codeshare partnership with a Canadian airline.
What makes the deal impactful
With demand for international travel steadily rising, airlines are focusing on partnerships rather than standalone expansion to improve connectivity and reduce travel friction.
For the travellers, such mergers come with:
- More flexibility in routes
- Earlier access to Europe without the need for multiple bookings
- Better connectivity through major hubs
The WestJet Icelandair codeshare agreement reflects a growing shift towards a network-driven, more seamless travel experience. If approved, this can make transatlantic journeys more accessible and simpler for Canadians planning their European getaways.
