The recent norovirus outbreak aboard a cruise ship has raised fresh concerns about passenger safety and health during overseas cruise travel.
According to reports, three Canadians were among the passengers affected during the voyage on the MS Ambition cruise ship operated by Ambassador Cruise Line.
The ship departed Belfast on May 8th, and after May 9th, cases began to rise. The ship is scheduled for a 14-night sail along the coasts of western Spain and France.
On May 10th, a 92-year-old male guest passed away, although the guests did not report any symptoms of gastroenteritis. The cause of death is still pending.
The vessel was temporarily held in France’s Bordeaux after many crew and passengers reported symptoms linked to vomiting and diarrhea. After a lab test, the French health authorities later confirmed that the spread of norovirus was behind the outbreak.
Nearly 60 passengers and four crew members reported gastrointestinal illness symptoms during the journey. But officials confirmed that no severe virus-related cases had been reported.
In an official statement, the Ambassador Cruise Line confirmed that “three Canadians among the 1187 guests onboard the ship.”
The cruise line also introduced measures to isolate, sanitize, and clean to contain the spread of the virus.
Assistance with dining services, additional hygiene protocols, and free medical consultations were provided to the passengers.
Norovirus is one of the most contagious gastrointestinal viruses and is commonly linked to cruise ship outbreaks due to shared facilities and close-contact environments.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, outbreaks on board cruise ships are publicly reported when at least 3% of the crew or passengers report symptoms.
The incident has once again highlighted the rising health concerns surrounding cruise travel in 2026, especially after the multiple onboard virus outbreaks recently.
Despite the outbreak, French authorities later allowed the asymptomatic passengers to disembark after completing additional sanitation procedures and health checks. Health experts continue to advise cruise travellers to maintain hand hygiene, avoid contact with infected individuals, and report any symptoms immediately.
