Canada Keeping International and U.S. Border Closed Until June 21

Here we go again.

Canadian authorities today said Canada’s borders will remain closed to all but essential traffic for another month.

In a note on his Twitter feed, federal Public Safety Minister Bill Blair said the Trudeau government is “extending travel restrictions on non-essential international travel and with the United States until June 21, 2021.

“We will continued to base our decisions on the best public health advice available to keep Canadians safe from COVID-19,” Blair wrote.

The previous closure order was due to expire tomorrow.

As reported by Canadian Travel News, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection site posted a note several days ago to say the border would be closed until June 20, 2021.

The border was first closed to most traffic in March of 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

The Trudeau and Biden administrations have held talks about how the border should be reopened, but with COVID-19 numbers still strong in some parts of Canada it was likely seen as too early for Canada to unlock the gates.

There’s some talk of relaxed restrictions perhaps coming into place in June or July, but it’s unclear when a wider border opening might take place.
