Toronto-Delhi Flights to Save Nearly 3 Hours with Air India’s Boeing 787-9

A major upgrade is coming to one of Canada’s busiest India-bound routes. Starting August 1, 2026, Air India will deploy its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner between Toronto and Delhi, delivering shorter flight times, modern cabin interiors and the airline’s first-ever Premium Economy experience in the Canadian aviation sector.
Air India Boeing 787-9 Cuts Toronto-Delhi Travel Time
The introduction of Air India’s new Boeing 787-9 marks a significant improvement for travellers, eliminating the technical fuel stop in Vienna on the Delhi-Toronto service. Subject to available airspaces, the westbound journey will now take up to 17 hours, nearly 3 hours less than the current flight time of around 20 hours.
Air India will also restore daily Toronto-Delhi flights from August 1 after temporarily reducing frequencies to five weekly services earlier this summer. The airline’s renewed confidence in the market comes as demand between Canada and India remains strong.
In a press release, Campbell Wilson, CEO and managing director for Air India, said, “Canada is home to one of the world’s largest and most vibrant Indian diaspora communities, and Toronto has long been one of Air India’s most important international gateways.”
This latest development came right after the recent announcement on Air India’s broader North American expansion efforts, including its growing presence at upcoming JFK Terminal 6.
Premium Economy Debuts in Canada on Air India
For the first time, Air India passengers travelling between Toronto and Delhi will have access to a dedicated Premium Economy cabin.
Key upgrades for travellers
- 30 Business Class suites with direct aisle access, fully flat 79-inch beds, wireless charging and 17-inch 4K entertainment screens.
- 28 Premium Economy seats in a spacious 2-3-2 configuration with 38-inch pitch, enhanced recline, leg rests and larger entertainment screens.
- 238 Economy Class seats designed for improved long-haul comfort.
- More than 3,000 hours of entertainment through the latest Thales AVANT Up system with Bluetooth connectivity and USB-A/USB-C charging ports.
- Wellness-inspired mood lighting and a refreshed onboard dining experience.
The upgrade marks a notable turnaround following recent operational challenges that led to temporary flight reduction in India-Canada route.
Canada-India Travel Gets a Major Boost with Faster Air Connectivity
The updated service will reduce the Delhi-Toronto journey to approximately 17 hours and 15 minutes, while the Toronto-Delhi flight will continue to operate nonstop in about 16 hours and 5 minutes.
Not every flight on the route will feature the new aircraft immediately. Air India is scheduled to operate seven of its ten weekly Delhi-Toronto services with the Boeing 787-9, while the remaining three weekly flights will continue using the Boeing 777-300ER.
