BC Ferries Cancels Vancouver–Sunshine Coast Bookings Amid Mechanical Malfunctions

Travellers planning to sail between Horseshoe Bay and Langdale are facing new restrictions after BC Ferries confirmed a mechanical failure. Ferries operating between Vancouver and Sunshine Coast has reduced vehicle capacity on one of the region’s busiest summer routes.
The major Canadian marine transportation corporation has cancelled some reservations and moved to advance-booking-only travel while repairs are underway.
Langdale Terminal Breakdown Impacts BC Ferries Services
The disruption stems from a mechanical issue affecting Berth 1 at the Langdale terminal on the Sunshine Coast. As the upper loading ramp is unavailable, vehicles are loaded only onto the main vehicle deck through Berth 2. This significantly limiting the number of vehicles each sailing can carry. Impacts on ferry passengers
- Vehicle travel is currently operating on an advance-booking-only basis.
- Some reservations have been cancelled due to reduced vessel capacity.
- Standby vehicle availability is expected to be minimal.
- Sailings continue to operate, but with fewer vehicles accommodated on board.
Vessel Repairs Could Take Up to 10 Days
BC Ferries describes the affected ramp system as a complex piece of terminal infrastructure. Initial estimates suggest repairs could take up to 10 days, with reduced-capacity operations expected to remain in place through July 15.
For Sunshine Coast residents, commuters and summer tourists, the disruption comes during a peak travel period when demand is traditionally high. BC Ferries says maintenance crews are working to restore full service as quickly and safely as possible and advises customers to monitor service notices before travelling.
Ritinder Matthew, director of communications for BC Ferries, said, “This is a complex piece of terminal infrastructure, right? And so while it’s still early in the repair process, our initial estimate is that repairs could take up to 10 days. We’ll have a better understanding of the timeline as the work progresses today, and we’ll continue at keeping customers updated through service notices.”
Travellers Are Advised to Plan Ahead
The latest disruption is another setback for travellers relying on the Horseshoe Bay–Langdale route during the busy summer season. While BC Ferries says crews are working to restore full service as quickly and safely as possible, passengers are being advised to plan ahead and secure reservations wherever possible.
The incident of Langdale terminal breakdown reminds of previous operational disruptions experienced across the BC Ferries network. Among them was a police incident aboard the Queen of Surrey that prompted a large emergency response and a temporary shutdown of Horseshoe Bay ferry facilities.
While the circumstances were very different, both events highlight the importance of contingency travel planning on critical coastal transportation routes.
