British Airways Mayday Heathrow Incident Triggers Serious Safety Investigation

A British Airways Mayday Heathrow incident is under investigation after an Airbus A320 approaching London’s Heathrow Airport declared a Mayday emergency following multiple stall warnings and a critical onboard systems failure.
The Aircraft safely landed without any injuries, but the aviation authorities have classified this event as a serious incident.
The flight BA919 from Düsseldorf, Germany, was approaching Heathrow on 6th July when the crew encountered technical problems linked to the Aircraft’s air data system. As per investigators, the failure triggered a stall warning during the initial approach, forcing pilots to abandon the landing attempt.
What happened during the British Airways Mayday Heathrow incident?
France’s Air Safety investigation authority said that the Airbus A320 suffered an ADR or Air Data Reference failure, affecting systems which provide critical flight information like altitude and airspeed.
The malfunction caused the Airbus’s flight control system to switch to ‘Alternate Law’ from ‘Normal Law’, reducing some of the automated flight protections which pilots rely on normally.
Following the first warning, the crew issued a PAN PAN urgency call and entered a holding pattern while completing safety checks.
During a second approach, another stall warning activated at approximately 3,000 feet, prompting what investigators described as a potentially abrupt maneuver.
The Aircraft reportedly descended to around 2200 feet before being stabilized. The crew then upgraded the emergency to a Mayday call, indicating a more serious situation, needing immediate priority handling.
Investigation underway
The UK Air Investigation Branch has confirmed it is investigating what it described as a serious incident involving a commercial aircraft on approach to Heathrow Airport.
British Airways said it is assisting investigators but cannot comment further while the inquiry remains active.
