Porter Cuts Fuel Surcharge on Reward Flights as Prices Begin to Ease

Porter Airlines has reduced its fuel surcharge on reward flight redemptions, signalling early relief for frequent flyers as global aviation fuel prices begin to stabilise.
The airline confirmed that the temporaryPorter fuel surcharge applied to VIPorter reward bookings has been lowered from $40 to $20, effective June 23, for new bookings.
Reason for introducing the surcharge
Porter first introduced the surcharge in March 2026 after jet fuel prices surged globally, nearly doubling due to geopolitical disruptions affecting oil supply.
The Porter fuel surcharge fee was designed as a temporary measure to offset rising operational costs, particularly for flights booked using loyalty points. At the time, the airline indicated that the surcharge would be removed once fuel prices returned to earlier levels.
Porter fuel surcharge – what’s changed
As fuel prices begin to normalise, Porter has moved to ease the burden on VIPorter members by reducing the surcharge by 50%.
However, the airline noted that fuel costs remain elevated—still about 50% higher than last year—which explains why the surcharge has not yet been completely removed.
The revised charge applies only to reward flight redemptions, while standard ticket bookings were never subject to the surcharge.
Impact on the travellers
For frequent flyers, the reduction lowers the out-of-pocket cost of using points, improving the value of reward bookings.
Surcharges-when applied to award tickets-can significantly affect how travellers redeem points, making adjustments like these particularly relevant for loyalty program members.
Industry context
Porter’s move comes as airlines continue to manage fluctuating fuel costs, one of aviation’s largest operating expenses. Several carriers introduced similar fuel-related fees earlier in 2026 in response to rising oil prices.
As market conditions begin to stabilise, gradual rollbacks like this could signal wider pricing adjustments across the industry.
While the surcharge reduction offers partial relief, Porter has indicated that further changes will depend on continued improvements in fuel prices.
If fuel costs continue to decline, the airline may eventually eliminate the surcharge altogether, restoring reward flight redemptions closer to their previous cost structure.
