The Clayfield has officially opened in Niagara-on-the-Lake, bringing Hyatt’s Unbound Collection to one of Ontario’s best-known wine destinations. The 102-room boutique hotel welcomes its first overnight guests this week, following the September 17 opening.

The hotel was first introduced to Canadian Travel News in May while construction was still underway. Read our earlier coverage of The Clayfield and its Clayfield Commons development.

Inside The Clayfield

Located at Clayfield Commons near Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake, the hotel was developed by John Hawley and David Feldberg, founder of Stratus Vineyards. The project has been about seven years in the making.

The property features 60 guestrooms and 42 residential-style accommodations, along with more than 5,400 square feet of meeting and event space. Montreal-based Sid Lee Architecture designed the hotel, with the building’s curved forms and timber elements drawing on the surrounding landscape.

The Clayfield also includes Terrain, a wine-country restaurant developed by Toronto’s Ascari Group, and a spa offering treatments inspired by Niagara’s clay-rich soil and wine country.

A rooftop with a view

One of the hotel’s latest additions is The Rooftop, a terrace overlooking the surrounding Niagara-on-the-Lake landscape. The Clayfield describes it as the destination’s only rooftop terrace.

The hotel is part of Clayfield Commons, a mixed-use development planned around a public square with restaurants, cafés, retail and gathering spaces.

Hawley and Feldberg have envisioned the hotel as a part of the Niagara-on-the-Lake community rather than a standalone property. At the September 9 ribbon-cutting event, Hawley spoke about the long development process and the original vision for the project.

“From the beginning, the vision for Clayfield Commons was to create a place connected to the character of Niagara-on-the-Lake itself,” Hawley said.

The opening makes The Clayfield the second Canadian hotel in Hyatt’s Unbound Collection, joining the brand’s growing portfolio of independent properties.

With its doors now open, The Clayfield brings together the pleasures of Niagara-on-the-Lake with a luxurious, refined place to stay.
