WestJet Introduces Cancel-For-Any-Reason (CFAR), Giving Canadian Travellers More Refund Flexibility
June 1, 2026 Team Contributor
WestJet is giving Canadians greater control over their bookings with the launch of a new Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) feature developed in partnership with Hopper Technology Solutions (HTS). Now available on WestJet’s website and app, this add-on lets eligible passengers cancel flights and recover much of their ticket cost.
The move comes as travellers increasingly seek flexible booking options amid rising uncertainty around flight schedules, personal commitments, and changing trip plans. By integrating CFAR directly into its booking process, WestJet aims to simplify cancellations and reduce the financial risks often associated with non-refundable fares.
WestJet’s Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) Option
CFAR is an optional protection product that travellers can purchase when booking eligible WestJet-operated flights. Customers can select either an 80% or 100% refund option during the booking process.
If a traveller decides not to take their trip, they can cancel their booking up to 24 hours before departure and receive the selected refund amount directly to their original payment method. The process is automated and does not require filing insurance claims or submitting supporting documentation.
The feature is currently available on Econo and EconoFlex fares booked through WestJet’s direct channels.
Hopper Technology Solutions (HTS) Expands Airline Innovation
The product was developed by Hopper Technology Solutions (HTS), the travel technology division of Montreal-based Hopper. HTS specializes in AI-powered travel and fintech solutions designed to address common traveller frustrations, including pricing uncertainty, disruptions, and limited booking flexibility.
The company has partnered with airlines, financial institutions, and travel providers worldwide to offer products that enhance the customer booking experience while creating additional revenue opportunities for travel brands.
The Strategy Behind WestJet’s CFAR Launch
The launch reflects growing demand for flexibility among North American travellers. According to data shared by HTS, flexibility remains one of the most important factors influencing flight purchases, particularly among frequent travellers.
CFAR was designed to address several common pain points:
- Losing money on non-refundable tickets when plans change.
- Complicated travel insurance claims processes.
- Limited refund options on lower-cost fares.
- Uncertainty when booking trips months in advance.
WestJet simplifies travel by integrating cancellation protection directly into the booking experience. The airline recently strengthened its global reach through a new codeshare partnership with Fiji Airways, creating additional travel opportunities across the South Pacific and beyond.
CFAR Brings New Advantages for Canadian Passengers
The new option may be particularly valuable for:
- Leisure travellers booking vacations well in advance.
- Families coordinating travel around school schedules and personal commitments.
- Frequent travellers whose plans may change unexpectedly.
- Passengers purchasing lower-cost fares that traditionally offer limited refund rights.
For these travellers, CFAR provides added financial protection without requiring an upgrade to more expensive refundable fare classes.
Important Limitations Canadians Should Know
While the product offers greater flexibility, it does not cover every travel scenario.
Canadian travellers can only use CFAR if they cancel at least 24 hours before departure. The protection also applies only to passenger-initiated cancellations.
It does not replace protections provided under Canada’s Air Passenger Protection Regulations (APPR), which govern compensation and refunds for airline-caused delays and cancellations.
If a flight is disrupted because of operational issues, weather events, or other circumstances covered by airline policies and regulations, flyers must rely on those existing protections instead.
In addition, the CFAR add-on itself is an extra-cost product, meaning passengers pay an additional fee for the flexibility.
Travel Protection Options Beyond CFAR
Travellers seeking additional flexibility may also consider:
- Fully refundable fare classes.
- Travel insurance policies that include trip cancellation coverage.
- Airline travel credits and future travel vouchers.
- Flexible booking options offered by online travel agencies.
CFAR differs by integrating the cancellation and refund process directly into the airline’s booking ecosystem, making it faster and easier for many travellers to access refunds.
As Canadian travellers continue prioritizing flexibility and financial security when booking flights, WestJet’s latest offering signals a broader industry shift toward more customer-controlled travel experiences. For passengers booking non-refundable fares, the new option could provide valuable peace of mind before departure.
The launch comes after WestJet recently broadened its international reach through enhanced interline booking partnerships. Together, the initiatives reflect the airline’s ongoing focus on providing travellers with greater convenience, flexibility, and access throughout the travel journey.
