Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach Hotel Fire Kills Tourist, 1700 Evacuated

A raging fire at a Caribbean resort has left one tourist dead and nearly 1,700 others scrambling for safety, an incident now raising fresh questions for Canadians heading into peak vacation season. 

The blaze broke out late morning on June 19 at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach resort in Bayahibe, a popular seaside destination on the Dominican Republic’s southeastern coast. Flames spread rapidly across the beachfront complex, fuelled by strong winds and the resort’s palm-thatched roofing, which officials say acted as a highly combustible material.  

The country’s Emergency Operations Center (COE) said, “Preliminary observations indicate that the fire spread rapidly due to the flammable nature of parts of the roof structures made of palm, as well as wind conditions.” 

Emergency crews battled the fire for several hours before bringing it under control. In the meantime, about 1,690 guests, including families with children, were evacuated and relocated to nearby hotels and facilities. Despite the scale of the evacuation, authorities say the response prevented further fatalities.  

The sole victim has been identified as 46-year-old Francesca Valentino of Italy, who reportedly died after suffering smoke inhalation. At least nine others were injured; three required hospital treatment, while several more were treated at the scene, including guests and emergency responders.  

Eyewitness footage captured thick black smoke rising above the coastline as fire engulfed large sections of the resort’s straw-roofed structures. The property, operating at high occupancy at the time, has been closed indefinitely, with investigations underway into the exact cause of the blaze.
