Canada and Vietnam have recently finalized an expanded air transport agreement. The Canada- Vietnam air transport agreement enables direct flights between the two countries for the first time. Announced on 24th September 2026 in Ottawa, the updated framework for Canada – Vietnam direct flights is expected to establish a stronger aviation bridge for serving the growing cultural exchange, transpacific tourism and commercial ties across the Indo-Pacific region.

The expanded agreement directly speeds up travel between the two nations, replacing multi-leg connections with streamlined direct air corridors.

Overview of the agreement

  • Direct flight rights – first-time authorization for non-stop passenger service
  • Bilateral Merchandise Trade (2025) – $20.6 billion total two-way trade
  • Vietnamese Canadian population – ~275,000 residents driving VFR (Visiting Friends & Relatives)
  • Cargo rights – Fifth-freedom rights for operational flexibility
  • Weekly cargo capacity – Up to 7 weekly all-cargo flights per country
  • Weekly passenger capacity – Up to 14 weekly passenger-combination flights per country

Canada – Vietnam direct flights – a game changer for tourism and cultural exchange

Until now, Canadian travelers heading to Southeast Asia navigated layovers in secondary transit hubs like Taipei, Seoul, or Tokyo.

The introduction of up to 14 direct weekly passenger flights will significantly reduce the transit times for leisure travelers visiting Vietnam’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, coastal resorts and culinary hotspots like Hanoi and Ha Long Bay in the north to Hoi An, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City in the south.

The Canada-Vietnam air transport agreement will also play a vital role for the community. Canada is home to approximately 275,000 Vietnamese Canadians, creating a year-round and strong baseline demand for VFR travel, family visits and student exchanges.

“With every new or expanded air transport agreement, we are paving the way for more convenient travel and exciting new opportunities for investment, trade, and international collaboration. I’m so pleased to see this enhanced cooperation between Canada and Vietnam, a growing market with a rich culture and history,” – Steven MacKinnon, Minister of Transport.

Boosting the Indo-Pacific destination and connectivity

As Vietnam continues to rank among Canada’s fastest-growing air travel markets in Asia, enhanced air connectivity is expected to spur two-way travel.

Beyond outbound leisure travel from Canada, direct routes offer international students, Vietnamese travelers, and business delegations seamless access to Canadian urban centers and eco-tourism destinations across the provinces.

This announcement directly aligns with the broader goals of Indo-Pacific diversification, facilitating both commercial traffic and leisure tourism across Southeast Asia.
