Finnair has returned to Canada with the launch of direct flights between Toronto and Helsinki, after more than a decade. This move from the airline company reflects growing confidence in transatlantic travel demand and changing trends.
The Finland-based airline started operating the route on May 4, 2026, with three flights a week during the summer season. Services are available for travellers on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays through an Airbus A330, which offers Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy cabins for both leisure and business travellers.
This relaunch of Canada to Finland flights marks Finnair’s first Canadian service since 2015, restoring a direct connection between both countries that had been absent for around 11 years.
Departures from Toronto Pearson International Airport are timed at 11:40 p.m., arriving in Helsinki at 2:45 p.m. the following day. The return leg will leave Helsinki at 4:50 p.m., landing back in Toronto at 6:35 p.m. local time.
“We’re extremely excited to be returning to Canada with the first and only direct, transatlantic flight between Canada and Finland. Whether they are exploring Helsinki or connecting elsewhere in the Nordics or Europe, we look forward to welcoming more Canadians than ever this summer,” said Javier Roig-Sanchez, General Manager, North America, Finnair.
“If there is one airport where we’re flying to that lacks fuel and we cannot refuel when we land, we are ready to do fuel tankering,” he said, highlighting the airline’s 103-year legacy has equipped it to navigate a wide range of disruptions.
The new schedules of Finnair transatlantic flights have been designed with connectivity in mind. Helsinki is now serving as a strategic hub, offering onward connections to destinations across Europe, Scandinavia, and parts of Asia, including Delhi, India. This reflects Finnair’s long-standing strategy of linking North America with Asian markets through its northern hub.
The return of Finnair with the Toronto–Helsinki flights represent more than a route launch. It reflects a recalibrated strategy aimed at strengthening North American ties and expanding global connectivity for Canadian travellers across less-served destinations across the Baltics and Nordics.
In a similar move, Air Transat also announced expanding its Winter 2026–2027 network with four new routes and enhanced transatlantic service.
