WestJet Strike Notice Escalates Dispute as Airline Issues Lockout Notification

Big development coming in on the WestJet strike. Canada’s leading low-cost airline and largest vacation provider has responded to the WestJet strike notice from the union by issuing a lockout notice that moves things from a possibility to a very likely work stoppage this weekend.

In the latest WestJet flight attendants strike update, CUPE’s Alia Hussain, who chairs the union’s WestJet contingent, said in a news release on Thursday: “We have been clear about what needs to change, and we have worked hard to reach a fair deal,”.

CUPE, representing WestJet’s 4,400 flight attendants, had formally served the airline a 72-hour strike notice early Thursday morning. Now, WestJet has responded by issuing its own 72-hour lockout notice.  

What does the 72-hour lockout notice from WestJet mean?

Ever since it was issued, the WestJet strike notice has drawn mixed reactions from industry experts, Canadian travellers and rights bodies. Now, with WestJet’s recent lockout response, speculation of a standstill has intensified.

The 72-hour lockout notice means the airline is now legally positioned to shut cabin crew out of work, on its own terms and timeline, rather than only reacting to a union walkout. These notices do not immediately affect operations or indicate that a labour disruption will occur.

Why WestJet countered with a lockout instead of just waiting

This is a fairly standard defensive move in Canadian labour law. In practice, a lockout notice allows the company to control when and how a shutdown occurs. They can effect a phased wind-down rather than being caught flat-footed by a sudden union walkout mid-schedule.

WestJet has its fair share of lessons from past events during the 2023 pilots’ dispute and the 2024 maintenance workers’ dispute.

He explained, “The decision to issue a lockout notice, in response to the actions taken by the union, was not one that was made lightly. We sincerely regret the inconvenience and uncertainty this continues to cause for our guests.”  

He further adds, “We greatly value the work and contributions of our Cabin Crew, and it is our responsibility to ensure the integrity of our network and to minimize the risk of stranding our guests, crew and aircraft. Our commitment remains at the bargaining table, where we will continue to work around the clock to come to an agreement that provides value and meaningful improvements for our Cabin Crew and is sustainable for our company.”

Where things stand now – Is a WestJet strike now a reality

Both notices carry a mandatory 72-hour countdown. That puts the earliest possible work stoppage at Sunday at 12:01 a.m. Mountain Time, right in the middle of the August long weekend. It should be noted that both WestJet and CUPE are still actively negotiating to reach an agreement.

Bargaining can still continue right up to the deadline, and either side could reach a deal or extend talks before Sunday. But the mood has perceptibly shifted.  The latest WestJet flight attendants strike update confirms both sides remain far apart on wages and ground-duty pay, even as the clock runs down to a potential Sunday shutdown. 

The formal notice exchange is being seen in the industry as the last procedural step before an actual shutdown. So it all depends on which way it goes from here.

How will the airline respond in the event of a WestJet Strike?

WestJet, which operates more than 600 flights a day, is expected to begin winding down its schedule as early as Friday, and the airline says travellers booked between now and Tuesday can change or cancel their plans at no extra cost.

The airline has assured that it will take all necessary actions to manage the potential impacts as much as possible. It will also continue to offer Flexible Change/Cancel policies for those guests with travel bookings between July 30, 2026, and August 4, 2026, who wish to make alternate arrangements.

In the event of delays and cancellations, impacted guests will be refunded or reaccommodated. Those who have booked directly with WestJet will receive a direct communication via email. Guests who booked through a travel agent or an online booking agency should contact the third parties directly.

Another important piece of information on the WestJet flight attendants strike update is here. WestJet and CUPE have also quietly worked out the logistics of an actual shutdown. According to a plan shared with union members this week, any flight already in the air when a strike or lockout begins would still complete its journey.

Crew unable to get straight home would be put up in hotels for up to seven days, or flown back to another Canadian city, “subject to seat availability.”

What this means for travellers right now

• Jazz Aviation’s separate dispatcher dispute remains on its own track, with an Aug. 1 strike possible — so Air Canada Express routes carry a parallel, independent risk.
