It’s hardly a surprise, but it’s still a bitter pill to swallow for the travel and tourism industries.
The Canadian government on Friday announced that it’s keeping the U.S. border closed to all but essential traffic until Jan. 21, 2021.
The current closure order was due to expire in ten days.
“We are extending non-essential travel restrictions with the United States until January 21st, 2021,” Federal Minister of Public Safety Bill Blair said on his Twitter feed today. “Our decisions will continue to be based on the best public health advice available to keep Canadians safe.“
The Canada-U.S. border, the longest international border in the world, has been closed to non-essential travel for more than half-a-year. Essential workers, including health care professionals and truck drivers bringing important goods over the border, can still cross by land.
Canadians and Americans are allowed to fly between the two countries, but anyone arriving in Canada who is not an essential worker has to quarantine for 14 days, including both visitors and Canadians coming home.
