CBC – Jamaica Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett says he understands that Canada has to manage the COVID-19 virus, but that he was surprised by the decision to suspend all flights to the Caribbean and Mexico through the end of April.
“Yes, it is painful,” Bartlett said in an interview with the CBC. “Yes, it is difficult and it is causing us some unintended consequences, because I know that Canada has no real intention of hurting Jamaica.”
Canada is a major source of tourism revenue for Jamaica, with up to 200,000 visitors every winter. Bartlett said the flight suspension could cost Jamaicans $449 million CAD in lost revenue.
