Canadians Flying Home And Avoiding Costly Hotel Quarantine Rules

The Montreal Gazette says thousands of Canadians are dashing back to Canada, apparently in an attempt to avoid new, costly hotel quarantine rules that could be brought in at any time.

The newspaper says Canadians are coming home by the planeload in advance of the new rules, which will require everyone who lands in Canada to take a PCR test for COVID-19 and then wait at an airport hotel for up to three days while they await test results. The hotel stay will cost about $2,000 per person, the federal government says.

People who test negative will be allowed to go home for the rest of their mandatory, 14-day quarantine, but will face more security checks to be sure they’re not leaving the house. Anyone who tests positive for the virus will spend the rest of their 14-day quarantine at some kind of government-approved facility.

The Gazette says a government website suggest the changes are coming soon. There also is a page that hotels can access if they want to be a designated quarantine facility, which doesn’t sound all that exciting but is a lot better than sitting at 10% occupancy.

Air Transat says it expects to bring some 3,800 Canadians home to Toronto and Montreal by next weekend.
