California to Fully Re-Open June 15 if COVID Stays Under Control and Vaccines Continue

California Governor Gavin Newsom says the Golden State will fully open its economy and allow all sectors to resume “usual operations” on that date — assuming that residents 16 and older who wish to be inoculated can and hospitalization rates are “stable and low.”

California is one of the most visited destinations in the world and one of the most popular for travelling Canadians.

MSN reports that schools will be allowed to conduct full-time, in-person instruction if following public health guidelines, and large-scale indoor events will be capped at 5,000 people through Oct. 1 unless testing or vaccination status is verified for all attendees.

The reopening date could change based on case rates, hospitalizations and vaccine efficacy, officials said.

“The governor’s reopening plan is tremendous news for some of the hardest-hit areas of the economy, especially the conventions and large meetings sector that has been completely shut down for 14 months,” said U.S. Travel President Roger Dow.

“It is fully possible to safely hold conventions and large meetings while observing prescribed health standards and practices, and California’s new guidance allowing such gatherings up to 5,000 people is in full agreement with current science and the CDC’s assessment that it is safe for vaccinated individuals to travel,” Dow said. “Other states should follow this example of a science-driven reopening, especially as more and more Americans get vaccinated.”

California has administered roughly 20 million COVID-19 vaccine doses. Newsom said that should rise to 30 million by the end of the month, which is all but a handful of the 32 million people in California who are eligible for the vaccine.

Starting April 15, all Californians ages 16 and up can get the vaccine, MSN said.

As the most populous state in the U.S. California has reported more coronavirus cases (almost 3.6 million) and more virus-related deaths (58,534) than any other, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
