With COVID-19 variants on the rise in Canada, Ontario Premier Doug Ford says the Trudeau government needs to bring in tougher travel restrictions.

“We need the federal government to bring in tighter restrictions at the border,” Ford said during an afternoon media briefing that was focused on school openings. “We haven’t even hit the peak in this variant,” he said.

The premier said the rise of British, South African and Brazil variants have hit Canadians hard.

“I can’t stress this enough,” Ford said. “We’re at a critical point right now.”

The premier didn’t elaborate on what changes he’d like to see at Canada’s borders.

Speaking about schools, Ford said the COVID-19 situation in Ontario “is changing quickly, and we need to respond.”

Ford said Ontario schools will remain closed following the current spring break that’s taking place this week. He said Queen’s Park will monitor numbers and make a decision later on when schools can re-open.
