Canada Could Reach Magic Vaccine Numbers by June 28. Would Restrictions Ease?

A lot could change, but a Calgary professor says June 28 might be a day of deliverance for Canada’s decimated travel and tourism industry.

Trevor Tombe, an associate professor at the University of Calgary, has been putting out a series of Twitter posts about Canada’s vaccination rates and related topics.

Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s chief public health officer, said recently that Canada might be able to ease travel restrictions once 75% of Canadian adults have one vaccine and 20% have both of their shots.

Looking at vaccine supplies and potential rollouts, Tombe said that would require 30 million doses in all.

“We’re on pace for that by June 28,” he said on his Twitter feed.

That doesn’t guarantee anything, but it could potentially lead to a pretty good celebration on Canada Day. It also could allow tourism businesses to open in time for the busy July-August summer season.

Let’s hope the professor knows his stuff, and that perhaps we get some extra vaccines from the U.S. that would speed things up a little.
