Newfoundland and Labrador Hopes to Reopen July 1

Newfoundland and Labrador says it hopes to welcome visitors from other parts of Canada starting July 1.

Government officials said on Wednesday that, if their COVID-19 numbers continue to improve this month, the province will allow fully vaccinated travellers to visit without the need for a test or quarantine. Health officials said they need hospitalization rates to continue to drop and for roughly 75% of those aged 12 and over to have their first vaccine.

CTV News reports that Canadians who’ve had a single vaccination will need to show a negative result from a COVID-19 test taken within three days of their departure date. They also can isolate until they get a negative test result.

The rules are set to change again on Aug. 15, allowing partially vaccinated Canadians to visit without providing test results or having to isolate. Unvaccinated Canadians will have to self-isolate for 14 days after they arrive.

“This is the day many people have been waiting for,” said Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Janice Fitzgerald. “The reopening plan is a major milestone on the path to living with COVID-19.”

“We are also so excited to be able to welcome tourists back to Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Premier Andrew Furey. “Big news today for our tourism operators, businesses and everyone involved in our local economies who have suffered so much.”
