Want an Office at the Beach? Here Are Some Remote Work Tips

July 22, 2021 ctn_admin

Raise your hand if you’d like to work from some exotic city or an idyllic beach.

A new report from Accenture finds that 61% of Canadians prefer a hybrid or remote work model.

“Remote working has created new opportunities during the pandemic, where offices can now be anywhere from the kitchen table to a beach on the other side of the world,” RBC officials said. “In fact, a recent RBC survey shows more than a third (35% of English and 37% of French) of responders hope to continue working from home rather than going back to traditional brick and mortar offices.”

For those semi-retired, self-employed or with flexible work who might already be planning to capitalize on this newfound freedom, there are tools available to help transition to not just working from home, but working from anywhere.

Tips for Canadians to consider before their extended stay in the US:

  • Understand Entry and Exit Regulations: Canadians can fly to the U.S., but the land border between the U.S. and Canada is remaining closed to all but essential traffic until Aug. 21, 2021. Check the rules for any updates before you travel.
  • Plan ahead: Photocopy important travel and insurance documents and credit cards. Leave one set with a friend/family member who is not travelling with you, and keep one set with you.
  • Check your limits: If you plan to use your credit card often on your trip, be sure you have enough available credit on your card. Check the cellular and data plan on your phone and use it accordingly.
  • Understand tax implications: If you’re a freelancer working for American clients, be sure to separate and track your foreign and domestic income. There are likely different tax implications for each country.
  • Manage your budget: While an extended stay may feel like a vacation, it’s important to set a budget that won’t have your spending outpace earning.  Consider redeeming points for travel and activities while away and keep collecting while on vacation!
  • Expect the unexpected: Items get lost and there are delays, so consider a “slush fund” to cover the unexpected. Know what to do in case of an emergency – where to go, and who to contact.
  • Consider U.S. plastic: If you are thinking about making purchases – big or small – consider a U.S.-based credit card to avoid foreign transaction fees.
