Americans Jump at Chance to Drive to Canada

Traffic over the U.S.-Canada border more than doubled the week of August 9, when the Canadian government began allowing vaccinated Americans into the country via land crossings.

Federal government stats show that 218,732 non-commercial travellers entered Canada by land between August 9 and August 15. That includes both American and Canadian travellers, and represents an 111% increase over the week before.

It’s also nearly triple the number of Americans (74,562) who crossed the border for non-essential travel in the same week in 2020.

The CBC says the number of Canadians returning to the country increased to 111,210 from 101,214 the week before, but the number of “foreign nationals” nearly tripled, rising from to 32,520 to 95,573.

That’s good news for tourism operators. But it still pales in comparison to the 1.4 million visitors who came into Canada in the same week in 2019.
